NAME THAT COW

Have you ever been driving down the road or out for a stroll, noticed some cows, and wondered what breed of cow you were seeing? If so, you have come to the right place. There are many types of cattle and they get their names from many different origins. For example, the Guernsey cow, a popular cow in America, gets its name from the British island on which the cow originated.

In addition to having different names, cows have different purposes. The most common purpose of cattle is either for dairy or beef production. The Guernsey cow mentioned above is a common type of dairy cow, meaning that it is typically used to make milk. On the other hand, Angus cows are the most dominant breed of beef cattle. This means that the Angus cow is bred to produce meat, specifically beef. In fact, to be certified U.S. Angus beef, the cow itself must meet ten strict requirements, including hide color, marbling, and rib-eye size.

Besides Guernsey and Angus, there are many, many breeds of cattle in the United States. The chart below can help you identify what kind of cow you might be looking at the next time you come into contact with one!
